On the latest episode of Banter, AEI education experts KC Deane and Andrew Kelly discuss current negotiations in Congress over interest rates for certain government sponsored student loans. Yes, that’s an extraordinarily specific topic – but Congress has spent an extraordinary amount of time discussing it. The interest rate for certain loans recently doubled, and Congress hasn’t stopped bickering about it since. KC and Andrew explain the origins of the Congressional “debate” and evaluate some of the proposals on the table. They also clarify who uses these student loans and why they matter. KC and Andrew also take a step back and put forward education policies they’d prefer Congress spend it’s time and attention addressing. Enjoy!
