Banter #92: Do recent changes in Medicare hurt the poor?

Mar15th

1 Comment Written by Andrew

In the latest episode of the Banter podcast, we banter (get it!) with AEI healthcare expert Joe Antos on how recent changes to Medicare will negatively impact the most vulnerable. Joe walks us through how the poor are not receiving the care they need in traditional Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medigap plans. And if you’re fuzzy on what those programs are, Joe takes the time to describe to this 20-something host what’s what. He also outlines reforms that could fix the system. At the end of the day, if you allow people to make choices for themselves, they tend to make good ones. It’s not too dissimilar to the great choice you’re making in listening to this podcast. Enjoy!

In the latest episode of the AEI Banter podcast, AEI’s own Daniel Hanson sits down to answer whether or not trillion dollar deficits are sustainable for the US. While the GDP to deficit ratio may be high, there are other factors that enable the US to bear its current deficit. Daniel discusses what those factors are, what’s currently driving the deficit, and what the costs of decreasing the deficit would be. Daniel also compares America’s situation to that of several European nations, suggesting that things could be worse. What a silver lining!

On the latest AEI Banter podcast, we talk about our country’s culture of competition, or the possible lack thereof. And competing for your ears are not one, but two guests! First off, AEI’s own Dan Rothschild discuss what exactly a culture of competition means. Next, AEI visiting fellow Tim Carney sit down to banter about his research into how regulation affects competition, how politicians often confuse being pro-business with pro-competition, and why a competitive society matters. He also gives us a little insight to what Rand Paul’s filibuster was like from the Senate Gallery yesterday. If all that wasn’t delicious enough, we discuss competition through the lens of food trucks! Tasty, tasty food trucks. Bon appetit!

In this week’s episode of AEI’s Banter podcast, Stu and Andrew sit down with the man, the myth, the legend: AEI economist Michael Strain. The topic: minimum wage laws. Michael walks through the likely effects of raising the federal minimum wage law from $7.25 to $9.00 as President Obama proposed in his recent state of the union address. Michael touches on both economic theory and empirical studies to make his case, suggesting that unemployment would rise. But we don’t just stop there. We also discuss the potential upside of raising the minimum wage, who works in minimum wage jobs, and the value of these jobs for workers. Last, Stu and Andrew reminisce about minimum wage jobs they’ve held (present jobs excluded). As always, thanks for listening and enjoy!
